Agnes Caroline Thaarup Obel was born on October 28, 1980, in Copenhagen, Denmark. She now lives in Berlin, Germany.
Her music is often classified as chamber pop / neo-classical / ambient, a blend of classical sensibility with contemporary textures and minimalism. She tends toward sparse arrangements, intimate vocal production, layered textures, and a moody, atmospheric tone. Her influences include include Erik Satie, Claude Debussy, and other composers in the impressionistic / ambient / classical realm. She is also drawn to cinematic and narrative elements; in interviews she mentions enjoying film atmospheres (e.g. David Lynch, Hitchcock) and using her music to evoke images and emotion.
She grew up in a musical family: her mother played piano, and her father collected instruments and had jazz interests. She began playing piano very early, and was encouraged to play what she liked (not forced to conform) by her teacher. In her teens, she developed interest in studio / recording techniques and gradually moved into composing and making her own music. Obel's label affiliations are IAS, Deutsche Grammophon among others.

Citizen of Glass particularly solidified her critical reputation and expanded her audience. Her albums often show a progression: she starts from sparse piano-and-vocal beginnings and gradually incorporates more ambient textures, experimental instrumentation, and complex production.
Her songs appear in many TV shows, films, and trailers, such as “Riverside” in The Mist, Revenge, Grey’s Anatomy; “Familiar”, “Broken Sleep” used in Dark (German series); “The Curse” used in 9-1-1 and in the Scandinavian show The Investigation. She also contributed to film soundtracks (e.g. Submarino)
In 2011, she won five awards at the Danish Music Awards (including Best Album, Best Debut, etc.) for Philharmonics. Citizen of Glass won the IMPALA Album of the Year Award for independent European labels in 2016.
