Cluster was a German electronic music duo formed by Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Dieter Moebius, active from 1971 until Moebius’s death in 2015. They were central to the Krautrock and Berlin School movements, but unlike Tangerine Dream or Kraftwerk, Cluster specialized in a more abstract, minimalist, and atmospheric sound that bridged experimental and ambient styles.
Cluster was born out of the earlier group Kluster (with Conrad Schnitzler, a member of early Tangerine Dream). When Schnitzler left in 1971, Roedelius and Moebius continued as Cluster, shifting toward a more meditative, textural sound.
Notable projects are Cluster (1971) and Cluster II (1972), dark, experimental, industrial-tinged electronics; Zuckerzeit (1974), produced with Michael Rother (of Neu!), whch introduced more rhythm and melody and is often considered proto-electronica;
Sowiesoso (1976), which was gentler, pastoral, and atmospheric, anticipating ambient and new age. The also collaborated with Brian Eno on Cluster & Eno (1977) and After the Heat (1978) which were key albums in the development of ambient music.
Cluster explored synth-pop and electronic minimalism, sometimes under the name Harmonia (with Michael Rother).Their later albums combined their abstract roots with more accessible sounds. They continued performing and recording into the 2000s, with Roedelius carrying the legacy after Moebius’s death.
