Orbital is an English electronic music duo consisting of brothers Paul and Phil Hartnoll, formed in Sevenoaks, Kent, in 1989. They became one of the most important acts of the 1990s rave and techno scenes, combining euphoric dancefloor energy with intricate composition and live performance.
Orbital emerged from the UK acid house scene with their single “Chime” (1989) — a hypnotic acid track recorded in their parents’ house on a 4-track recorder. It became a surprise hit, reaching the UK Top 20 and landing them a spot on Top of the Pops. Their debut self-titled album, often called The Green Album (1991), helped define early UK rave culture.
Major Releases:
Orbital 2 (The Brown Album, 1993), cemented their reputation as innovators, featuring tracks like Halcyon + On + On, known for its lush ambient textures over driving beats; Snivilisation (1994) was more political and experimental, incorporating samples and layered structures; In Sides (1996), critically acclaimed, featuring epic, emotional techno like The Box and The Girl with the Sun in Her Head; The Middle of Nowhere (1999), continued their melodic, rhythmic evolution.
Orbital were among the first electronic acts to perform fully live shows using sequencers and synthesizers on stage rather than miming to backing tracks. They were famous for their head-mounted torches, which became their signature stage look. Their Glastonbury sets in the 1990s are legendary, helping establish dance music as a festival mainstage force.
Orbital broke up in 2004, reunited in 2008. They continued releasing albums, including Wonky (2012) and Monsters Exist (2018), blending classic Orbital sounds with modern touches.
