Cahill patented his design in for the Telharmonium1897. The instrument used tone wheels and dynamos to generate musical tones electrically. His vision was to deliver “music by wire”, transmitting performances over telephone lines to hotels, restaurants, and subscribers’ homes. At full scale, the Telharmonium was 200 tons and filled entire halls with its machinery.
It required massive amounts of power, dimming city lights during performances and crosstalk on phone lines caused unintended broadcasts of music into business calls. Impracticality and high costs meant it never became commercially sustainable.
Despite its commercial failure, Cahill’s invention anticipated the Hammond organ (which used similar tone-wheel technology), pioneered ideas of electrical sound synthesis and music broadcasting, and inspired later generations of electronic instrument builders.
