The Orb is a British electronic music group formed in 1988 by Alex Paterson and Jimmy Cauty, later joined by various collaborators. They were pivotal in defining the ambient house genre in the late 1980s and early 1990s, blending ambient textures with dub rhythms, samples, and dance beats.
The Orb began performing DJ sets in London clubs, mixing Brian Eno–style ambient music with house rhythms. Their early DJ sessions and white-label releases helped shape the sound that became known as ambient house — lush, spacious soundscapes over relaxed, often dub-inspired beats. Their early single A Huge Ever Growing Pulsating Brain That Rules from the Centre of the Ultraworld (1989) was a cult hit, sampling Minnie Riperton’s Lovin’ You.

The Orb’s Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld (1991): A landmark double album in ambient house, mixing field recordings, samples, and deep ambient grooves; U.F.Orb (1992): Reached #1 in the UK Albums Chart; included Blue Room, a 40-minute single that became the longest ever to chart in the UK.
They are known for their playful, psychedelic, spacey aesthetic, both musically and visually, and famous for immersive, trippy live shows with elaborate light projections and visuals. They treated live performances more like ambient soundscapes than traditional concerts.
They continued releasing albums through the 1990s and 2000s, collaborating with a wide range of artists (including David Gilmour of Pink Floyd on Metallic Spheres, 2010), and have remained influential in ambient, downtempo, and electronic music scenes.
