TWO LANES

TWO LANES

TWO LANES are a German electronic-music duo formed by brothers Leo Schmid and Rafa Schmid. Based in Berlin, they create a distinctive blend of electronica, ambient music, neoclassical piano, deep house and melodic techno, often balancing intimate acoustic piano with warm analogue synthesizers and restrained electronic rhythms.

Their music tends to be spacious and cinematic rather than club-oriented in the conventional sense. Piano melodies are frequently allowed to breathe over slowly evolving synth textures, bass pulses and minimal percussion. The result places TWO LANES somewhere between artists such as Nils Frahm, Christian Löffler, Ben Böhmer, Kiasmos and Ólafur Arnalds, while retaining a particularly polished melodic sensibility.

The brothers grew up in a musical family but followed quite different paths.

Leo Schmid gravitated toward classical piano at an early age, studying composers including J. S. Bach, Robert Schumann and Claude Debussy. His training eventually took him to The Juilliard School in New York, where he earned a master's degree in Historical Performance.

Rafa Schmid, meanwhile, became fascinated with synthesizers, electronic production and sound design. He spent years experimenting with the construction and manipulation of electronic sounds. Eventually the brothers realized that Leo's classical musicianship and Rafa's production instincts worked particularly well together. TWO LANES emerged around 2018, combining those two musical worlds.

A typical TWO LANES track may begin with a simple piano figure before layers of synthesizer, processed ambience, bass and percussion gradually appear. Rather than treating classical instruments as decoration on electronic tracks, the duo often makes the piano one of the central structural elements. Their music moves comfortably among, ambient electronica, melodic house and techno, neoclassical piano, downtempo, deep house, cinematic and electronic music.

This combination has found a substantial streaming audience. By the mid-2020s, the duo reported more than 500 million streams, alongside radio support from outlets including BBC Radio 1, SiriusXM and Triple
